What is Meditation?

Meditation as the means to personal responsibility is possible because it begins in the individual inner core within us that is independent of the outer world. As a living being you are self-active, meaning ultimately you are responsible for your decisions. Your decisions can arise from an inner independent core that is completely free or they can arise from habit. What's more, we're capable of knowing the difference. We experience inner freedom every time we make a decision that creates or reveals something that was previously unknown or unavailable to us.

Meditation arises through a fundamental recognition of the priority of life over the non-living. Through meditation the rules of life are gradually seen to be of a fundamentally different order of reality than those of the non-living part of the world.

The reason the process is most often gradual has to do with the way we as living beings grow in the world. We first become conscious of the unique reality of life’s powers and workings within an environment also composed of non-living objects and materials. All of our living actions are interwoven with countless non-living objects as well as with other living persons and creatures. The consequence is that it all takes time finding a fruitful living approach that is true to our nature. Meditation is the process of discovering what is really fruitful in our lives.

Meditation starts with a glimpse, often a first vague realization that there is a living reality independent of the world but also somehow confused with it. This glimpse is often experienced by the person as a revelation or profound intuition. Eventually the person may turn the glimpse into a consciously deliberate process of opening to the reality of pure life. At which point it might be considered to be some form of meditation practice.
